On the 22nd of June 2010 the second meeting of BAS EU & Political Interest Group was held at Instytut Teatralny im. Raszawskiego (next to Ujazdowski Park). An excellent presentation on “UK Election 2010: What it means for the British Constitution and the European Policy-Making" was delivered by Przemek Biskup, our BAS member, currently working as an Assiatant Professor at the Chair of European Studies, University of Warsaw. Przemek was Marie Curie Fellow at the Sussex European University, University of Sussex.
The aim of the presentation was to analyze the results of the General Election of May 6th, including establishment of the first peacetime coalition government since 1930’s in the light of difficult international and national situation, particularly the financial crisis. Several constitutional issues were discussed such as fundamental rule of Parliamentary sovereignty, “referendum lock”, abolishment of HRA and introduction of the Freedom Bill and the British Bill of Rights. The alumni exchanged their views regarding the British parliamentary system, the reforms needed under heavy pressure of the EU legislation, and justification of the British no to further EU integration.
The next EU&P meeting is planned for fall 2010. A more comprehensive seminar on British political and parliamentary system shall also be considered by BAS Management Board, as many alumni are interested in deepening their knowledge in these fields.
